Frequently Asked Questions about the Pittsburgh Piranhas

Q. How often do you practice?
A. We practice a minimum of once a week, year round. During the regular season, which runs from September through March, our practice slot is an hour long and focuses on drills, team concepts, and game preparation. We also occasionally add practices during the season if a tournament or the league’s game schedule warrant it.

During the summer, practices run 90 minutes and are generally more relaxed, often simply running as a fun pickup game that includes friends, significant others, or even children of our players.

Q. How much does it cost to be a Piranha?
A. Costs vary from year to year, so there is no set answer to this question. We hold a summer meeting at which we present an itemized budget that includes all our projected expenses for the upcoming season, including ice time, referees, travel, and other costs. We then factor in sponsorship money and current account balances, and divide the net costs by the number of players who commit to the season. So the per-player cost depends on a number of significant variables, such as the number of people on the roster and the hourly rate of our ice time.

We permit and encourage players to drop in for $15 per session, but drop-ins are not a substitute for the commitment fee. After three drop-ins, we expect players to make a decision about whether they want to commit to the team.

Q. Do you hold fundraisers?
A. Yes, we traditionally hold a number of optional fundraisers for our players. These have included selling Entertainment Books, flowers, candy, Yankee candles, as well as memorabilia raffles.

Whatever each player earns from the sale is applied directly to her individual bill, not to the entire team. Some players have financed almost their entire seasons this way; others choose not to participate at all. It’s up to you.

We have also held some fundraisers that do benefit the entire team, such as car washes and working as skate guards. Participation in these events is voluntary, but strongly encouraged.

We also encourage personal sponsorship. Anyone who sponsors you can have their logo and corporate information listed on our site

Q. Are there any requirements for being a Piranha?
A. We do require that all of our rostered players register as members of USA Hockey. You must renew registration on an annual basis and the organization’s year begins Oct. 1. We can help you thru this process.

Players must be at least 18 years old, including any participants in scrimmages or pickup games.

We also require full equipment in practices and games. Participants must assume all liability for any injuries that might occur.
